Stop-doing list Notion template for a consulting business
A Notion register classifying every service, customer category and internal programme as Keep, Behind or Stop.
The methodThe stop-doing register
Ships with How to narrow a consulting firm's services with a stop-doing list, and is available on its own.
The stop-doing register is a Notion template that lists every service, customer category and internal programme a consulting business runs, files each under Capability, Capacity or Go-to-Market, and classifies it Keep, Behind or Stop against five stated criteria. The stops are ordered by the standing cost each releases per month, not by the revenue lost, so the register closes a stated gap rather than expressing a mood. It covers the whole catalogue (catalog), including the internal programmes that never appear on a revenue line.
The inputs are the target gap the list has to close, taken from your ceiling and breakeven, and then every item in the catalogue with its standing monthly cost and a score against the five criteria. The Behind class exists because items come back, and a register with only Keep and Stop pretends they will not.
The outputs are the classified catalogue, the stops in order of standing cost released, a running total against the gap so you can see when the list has done its job, and a markdown mirror for anyone outside Notion. A worked example catalogue is filled in; it is invented and labelled as invented.
We narrowed the catalogue at DevOpsGroup under pressure in 2019, and I would rather you did it from strength, with the arithmetic first. The register is in development and comes with its playbook, How to narrow a consulting firm's services with a stop-doing list. The waitlist is open.

Questions
- Is the register available now?
- No. It is in development and comes with its playbook, How to narrow a consulting firm's services with a stop-doing list. The waitlist is open.
- Why order by cost released rather than revenue lost?
- Because the register exists to close a gap between cost base and ceiling. Revenue lost is the price of closing it; standing cost released is the thing that closes it.
- What is the Behind class for?
- Items that are not stopped and not kept: parked, with a written condition for coming back. Without it, everything you stop comes back unannounced.
